Creatine was identified in 1832 when Michel Eugène Chevreul separated it from the basified water-extract of skeletal muscle. He later on named the crystallized precipitate after the Greek word for meat, κρέας (kreas).Apart from its medicinal results, creatine material (as a portion of crude protein) can be used as an indication of meat quality.In service, creatine remains in balance with creatinine. Creatine is a derivative of the guanidinium cation.
