Backhoes are classified as a kind of heavy equipment that is mounted onto a tractor and used in construction for excavating purposes, although this is not their only use. Usually powered by hydraulics, they consist of two main parts: the boom, which is the arm attached closest to the tractor; and the dipper, also known as the shovel or bucket. These models were first created in the early 1950s by the British company JCB and have been in use ever since.
